When creating a new folder, the initial keyboard/input focus is set to the Cancel button instead of the Folder Name text field.
If you reflexively start typing the folder name without realizing the text field isn't focused, your keystrokes are intercepted by the main application window instead. For example, if you start typing numbers (1-5), it accidentally changes the star ratings of the currently selected photos in the background.
