Focus Peaking, what am I actually seeing when this is enabled?

I would appreciate a brief note on just what I see. Is it contrast detection? Edge detection? My new Nikon Z50II has a very sophisticated autofocus system, so understanding what I am looking at would be helpful. BTW, I do appreciate the Loupe as another way to check focus/sharpness.

It uses a laplacian edge detection algorithm on a grayscale version of the image. Metadata from your camera is not used at all for the focus peaking overlay. Basically it measures rapid local changes in brightness around neighbouring pixels that often indicate sharp detail.

OK, I think I understand that one! I do note the word "often" however. My curiosity about all of this is due to several things. 1. old eyeballs that don't see that well anymore, 2. always looking for an easier way to get something done, and 3. my new Z50II Nikon apparently has some capabilities of determining focus point. I should add that Nikon Studio is capable of showing this. I do appreciate the support you give for your app!
